La La How The Life Goes On

One of These Things Is Not Like the Other

Posted on: March 15, 2016

Here is a video highlighting how the current President handles hecklers vs. how Donald Drumpf handles them.

  1. Which one seems unflappable? Which one seems like a truculent schoolyard bully?
  2. Which one, even if you disagree with his policies, would you feel more comfortable with his finger on the button?
  3. Which one seems to understand that the right to peaceably assemble and to seek redress of grievances is enshrined clearly in our beloved US Constitution? Which one do you suspect might attempt to circumvent those rights?
  4. Which one shows respect for fellow American citizens with differing views? Which one encourages the crowd to violently remove them?
  5. Which one–again, regardless of political philosophy and policy views–would you have represent this great nation?

The Constitution is not magic. It only retains its power because We The People agree collectively and individually that it does. Countries with constitutions are a dime a dozen. Countries whose military or authoritarian leaders ignore those constitutions are also a dime a dozen. There is no magic formula at work here except for the fact that we all here in the United States agree that our Constitution is sacrosanct. We may disagree on the exact interpretation of it at times, but we never disagree that it is the governing document for our entire democracy. Inviolable. Transcending individual leaders and administrations.

We see in each Trump/Drumpf appearance a complete disregard for the Constitution in favor of an authoritarian dystopia in which dissidents are “carried out on stretchers,” in which citizens of specific faiths will have to register themselves, in which the First Amendment rights afforded to EVERY SINGLE CITIZEN regardless of viewpoint are to be decided on a case by case basis by the president and his mobs of supporters.

I’ll say it again. If you are not scared, you are not paying attention. Fascism is alive and well and thriving at a political rally near you.

And since we all need a little laugh, here comes Andy Borowitz to lighten the load:
